I've had a lot of questions about non-hormonal fertility methods and childbirth preparation. Here's my go-to list for families seeking to achieve (or avoid) pregnancy with natural methods.
The Creighton Model of FertilityCare
The Creighton Model FertilityCare System helps couples to get pregnant (or avoid pregnancy) by teaching a woman to observe her bodily changes throughout her cycle. It may surprise you to know that, if followed correctly, this method can be up to 98% effective. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8057183/
The Marquette Model for Achieving Pregnancy
The Marquette Method is a sympto-hormonal form of natural family planning (NFP). Women can use the Marquette Method track their reproductive hormone levels each day by performing a simple urine test and using a Clearblue fertility monitor to read the results. Research has shown the Marquette Method to be 98% to 99% effective when used correctly. The method also has optional cervical mucus and basal body temperature (BBT) tracking protocols. With the Marquette Method, there are less required days of abstinence than other methods of NFP. Urinary testing allows Marquette to identify the LH surge, which (short of ultrasounds) is the most precise method available to identify the day of ovulation.
How difficult is the Creighton and/or the Marquette Method?
One of the reasons that women choose the Creighton or the Marquette method is that once you learn the steps, it’s easy to work into your day. It’s a regular, once-a-day commitment, and then you're done. Part of the benefit of using one of these methods is that it puts the power of knowledge and awareness back into your hands. You begin to feel more connected to your body, your fertility, and you are more aware of changes or signs of things that are out of the ordinary and may require a trip to have a consult with your family doctor.
There are a surprising number of ways women can track fertility and there is no one "best" method for all women.
Choosing which method of natural family planning is best for you, is a personal choice. Natural family planning has been around for a long time, but it is not "one thing." There are many different options that women use, and they may use a combination of those options throughout their childbearing years based on which method best suits their needs at any given time. Some other options in natural family planning are Billings Ovulation Method, the Symptothermal Method, and FEMM.
Hormonal heath is not just possible, it is your right.
As a doula and childbirth educator, I believe and am an advocate for evidence based information and informed consent. Women should have all of their options available to them when it comes to planning for pregnancy and childbirth. My job as your doula and childbirth educator is to help you know your options so that you can do the research and find what works best for you and your family. My practice and my classes are centered around this philosophy. If you don't know your options, you don't have any.
